Sliced Review | Comixology Original

Typically, I don’t like to eat when reading comic books, but when reading Sliced, I couldn’t stop craving pizza!

Written and created by Rafael Scavone, Sliced is an original graphic novel about two rival pizzaiolos forced to set aside their generational rivalry and collaborate against a new high-tech competitor.

The two rival pizzaiolos' relatives were once friends, but when one of them gets involved with the mafia, the relationship is strained. Our main characters, Silvio and Pietro, don’t know whose relatives had a legitimate connection to the mafia and accuse each other of cheating in every way they can. This fuels their rivalry and drives them to outdo each other in the pizza business.

Unfortunately, the mafia they both despise has plans for the block where their pizzerias are located. A shakedown from the mafia kicks off the story, leading to reunions, schemes, and plenty of mouth-watering pizza. When the mafia fails to gain control with money, they open a competing pizzeria across the street from Silvio’s and Pietro’s with the intention of putting them out of business. These two families, who have been in the pizza business for generations, know a scam when they see one and team up to investigate, hoping to save both their pizzerias and their families’ livelihoods.

Guilherme Grandizolli’s art and Cris Peter’s colors bring the characters to life, giving the book a classic feel that could fit into any library, ready to teach readers about friendship, family, and the healing power of pizza.

Sliced is a breath of fresh air and will have me coming back for seconds, eager for more stories from Rafael Scavone and the team behind Sliced.

Sliced is available on Comixology on 11/13/24.
