RAMGOD Review

At a time of reboots and a continuation of older content, it’s refreshing to find something that’s familiar and yet new. RAMGOD evokes nostalgic feelings of Rob Cop, Blade Runner, and X-men 97 in a detailed, thrilling first issue.

Written and created by brothers Morgan and Owen Rosenblum, RAMGOD takes place in New City, but could easily be mistaken for a futuristic version of New York City.

The story follows the sport RAMGOD and the people’s team the Barracuda’s. As the people’s team, they have no corporate sponsors, we see them committing crimes to fund the tech needed for the heat based sport that is RAMGOD. Outside of the sport story line we meet Clint, a divorced cop, whose son is the Barracuda’s number one fan, with dreams of working as the team’s engineer one day. We see Clint slowly start to be pulled towards the Barracudas as he has a connection to a victim of the robbery the Barracuda’s committed earlier that day.

While reading the first issue, I couldn’t stop admiring the detail. Morgan and Owen are native New Yorkers and this books shows it! The details Caanan White added throughout the comic to the top and sides of the pages gives the book an almost sci-fi headset perspective. The colors from Ren Spiller makes New City seem like it’s Time Square in almost every section. It is a colorful contrast to cities of the future we’ve seen before in comics.

The last time I was this excited to read about a futuristic sport was Tron Legacy. I’m excited to see how RAMGOD expands its heat based sport into new areas and how things heat up between Clint and the Barracuda’s crimes.

RAMGOD from Massive Publishing hits comic shops 7/24/24.
